Aesthetics
From the Aesthetics Committee .... The dictionary defines aesthetics as "designed to give pleasure through beauty; of pleasing appearance" and that is what the Aesthetics Committee set out to do to our Los Banos Library this past summer. When we started in June it looked neglected and in need of some TLC, and after putting our heads together and organizing our ideas we started having fun ... infusing our love and enthusiam for libraries with some "beauty and pleasing appearance"! Here are some things we've accomplished since our June meeting: - We repainted the interior in beautiful colors. Volunteers did all the work and Lowe’s contributed all the paint. Working together we made an amazing improvement in its appearance and created a nice fresh "cared for" feeling.
- The library now has new signs and beautiful posters that show you where to find what you’re looking for … from reference works to fiction, you can now see at a glance where to look.
 - We’ve installed a display system on one wall for local artists’ works and there is a beautiful quilt made by a member of the local quilters’ guild displayed behind the circulation desk. Our community is full of artistic talent and we're sharing that with our Los Banos community through rotating exhibits.
- Wonderful dragonfly mobiles now are suspended overhead in the children's area ... but everyone, young and old, enjoys them and feels their free spirit and the inspiration to soar ... just what libraries are all about!
- Recently we had a kiosk built for us that serves as an information center to post notices about library news and events that are of interest to our patrons. Take a look and see what's going on around town.
- We decided our young adults needed their own section of the library with both fiction and nonfiction works that help them grow, learn and enjoy all that the library offers. We've made a start and have still more ideas to enhance this area and attract young people.
We've just begun to enjoy the fruits of our labors and love hearing all the compliments and nice words of appreciation from the many people who regularly use our library. There are more plans for "beauty and pleasing appearance" down the road. If you have some of your own good ideas please share them with us!
